“Pag may alak, may balak (if there is alcohol, there is an intention). The phrase does not only demonize drinking alcohol. It also normalizes abuse done by men on women they drink alcohol with.
This sick and wrong assumption, that women who drink alcohol and pass out, want and can be abused, is also prevalent in the United States. This prompted Youtube users such as Samantha Stendal to upload a video on said content-sharing site to raise awareness on how to properly treat women who pass out after a fun night of drinking.

The 25-second video entitled “A Needed Response” was such a hit on social media that it already garnered 11,000,000 views.
The video was dedicated “to the Stuebenville rapists.. or any rapists out there.” This is in reference to the 2012 Steubenville rape case in Steubenville, Ohio, wherein a high school girl was undressed, abused and even photographed by other high school students after a night of drinking alcohol.
In the video, a supposedly drunk woman was sleeping on the couch. A man then proceeded to put a pillow on the woman’s head and prepared her a hot drink.

The men then said at the end of the video, “Real men treat women with respect.”

We should treat anyone, may they be a woman or a man, with respect. Never take advantage of anyone, especially someone who simply had some fun.
