In “The Lord of the Rings,” a hobbit is a tiny, humanoid creature who lives in a little underground shelter called a “hobbit hole.” Hobbits are typically portrayed as clever little creatures and it’s quite obvious Dan takes after them when it came to designing his home.

How did all of this come about? In the early ‘90s, Dan Price went back to his home state with a desire to live well within his means. After serving as the caretaker for a mansion with an approximate heating bill of about five hundred bucks a month, Dan figured that the best way to live comfortably was to avoid paying mortgage or rent.

Thus, he had the brilliant idea of building an underground home that was as self-sufficient as the hobbits that inspired it. The first structure that Dan built initially served as his home/office. In fact, his first hobbit hole was where he published his zine titled “Moonlight Chronicles.”
